Being Real: Honda ATV Nation

It’s that time of year when we head out to the trails in central Ontario for our Fall run. This is by far my most favorite time of the year to go ATV’ing.  The colors, the fresh-ness of the air, and the comradery amongst friends.  So for this post I am looking at the history of Honda ATV’s (Utility, not Racing), simply because that is the only ATV I have driven and have come to respect the reliability of these utility/trail machines.

One quick personal story on the reliability of Honda ATV’s- we were back on the trails and probably a good 10-15km from our base camp.  My friend’s Kawasaki Brute force wouldn’t start due to a dead battery.  So, on my friend’s advice, we took the battery out of my 2005 Honda Rancher Canadian Trail Edition to power his machine home. I pull start mine, as I didn’t know at the time that I didn’t need a battery to start my machine- so in essence my Honda powered both my machine and my friend’s Kawasaki!

So now on to Honda ATV Nation:

1984 Honda TRX 200:

Honda’s first 4 wheeler- the 1984 TRX 200.  In its first year debuted 370,000 units were delivered, marking 69% of the market share for ATV’s sold in the US.  This is the model that basically killed the ATC world- why have 3 wheels when you can have 4, with 4WD at that.
